Hemp soil

Hemp soil

In order for the grower to complete a successful grow, the gardener needs to be very attentive to a multitude of factors. What to buy marijuana seeds, how to choose a feeding scheme, what lighting to install, what training to use, and what soil to choose.

Our article will tell you in general terms about what parameters you need to focus on, so that the substrate does not let you down at the right time.

Basic parameters of the soil mixture
In order to choose the right soil, it is necessary to know the main indicators that affect its quality. These include:

pH – the level of acidity of the soil
EC – electrical conductivity of soil
Nutrients content
Soil structure

pH – Soil acidity

Soil acidity is one of the most important indicators. Depending on it the plant can either assimilate 100% of the nutrients or lose this capacity completely. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14, where 0 is totally acidic and 14 is alkaline. Cannabis prefers balance, so it feels great in soils with values of 5.5-6.5.

It is worth noting that for the full assimilation of all substances by marijuana, the level of acidity should not stagnate at any one mark, but constantly “dance” in the specified range. This is because with different acidity, the plant absorbs different elements better. But this information is intended more for already a little experienced gardeners.

RS – soil electrical conductivity

The electrical conductivity of soil indicates its nutrient content. By controlling this index, the optimum content of the necessary elements can be maintained, which will help to avoid wilting and death of plants due to lack of nutrition. This way the cannabis plant will grow strong and healthy. The optimal EC values for cannabis vary between 0.75 and 2.0.

Nutrients and minerals

The main elements in cannabis life are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). The first is responsible for the set of green mass and is most needed on the vega, the second becomes critical on the flower, and the third is always needed. It is potassium that is responsible for the immunity strength of the plant.

This “cocktail” is usually already contained in the purchased soil, but the stock of substances decreases over time, and the gardener needs to resort to fertilizing. In this case, the main thing is not to overdo it and clearly follow the instructions, because it is much more difficult to get rid of the consequences of an overabundance of elements than the consequences of a shortage. Observe the golden rule, according to which you should start feeding the plant with a quarter of the dosage recommended by the manufacturer. Then just monitor the condition of the bush, if there are no signs of chemical burn (yellowing and dying leaves), then increase the dosage to half of the recommended and so on.

When buying ready-made soil in the store, pay attention to the NPK values. For example, a proportion of 20:20:20 indicates that the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium content is 20% each. Any fertile soil also contains other nutrients such as iron, calcium, sulfur, magnesium. However, their content is not as fundamental to healthy cannabis growth.

Soil structure
Soil retains heat and moisture. Their amount varies depending on the type of substrate chosen. If there is too much water in the soil, the cannabis root system will begin to rot, if not enough, the plant will begin to wilt.

The thermal conductivity of the soil is no less important. In cold climates, keeping the roots warm will prevent them from getting too cold. In a hot climate on the contrary – the substrate should not allow the roots to overheat.

To provide hemp (and any plant, in principle) with the most comfortable conditions, gardeners add various additives to the soil mixture:

Sand and silt. In combination with the soil, they improve the drainage properties of the substrate. They are usually placed in a layer at the bottom of the pot.

Perlite and vermiculite. Help retain moisture in the soil and promote good aeration.

Coconut fiber. Increases the friability of the soil, allows moisture to be distributed evenly and also has a positive effect on aeration.

Claydite. It is used both as drainage (laying on the bottom of the pot), and as mulch (laying on top of the soil). In the first case, it accumulates excess moisture, in the second – it helps to maintain a comfortable temperature for the roots.

Clay. Contains large amounts of potassium and magnesium necessary for the plant, in the form of easily digestible mineral salts. It also serves as a kind of “warehouse” where nutrients from the outside are stored. However, clay also prevents the drainage of moisture, so it can only be used when crushed to small fractions.

Humus. This is decomposed organic compounds that contain a large amount of nutrients, easily absorbed by the cannabis.

Vermicompost. An even more advanced version of humus. To obtain this type of soil, the latter is literally given to worms for food. Their waste has bactericidal properties and is about 4 times more fertile than the fattest chernozem.
The right combination of these elements will make it possible to create a soil mixture in which anything can easily grow. You can avoid complications and order a ready-made substrate, where the composition was taken care of by the manufacturer, but preparing the substrate with your own hands will save your budget and allow you to hone your horticultural skills.

Here is a universal recipe that allows you to create a soil mixture, which has enough nutrients for a full cycle of growing autoflowers:

5% vermicompost
25% chernozem or garden soil
30% coconut fiber
10% perlite
10% vermiculite
The coconut fiber should be sure to wash until the flowing water is crystal clear. Prepared soil mixture is sprinkled with Baikal EM solution, mixed at a ratio of 1 : 500. It is worth remembering that such a substrate is organic, so the use of mineral fertilizers is unacceptable. But in the case of an autoflowering variety growing in this kind of soil mixture, you will not need them.

Now you know the basic requirements of marijuana potting soil and how to make it yourself.
